ABOUT ME

My name is Luca and I am a Level 3-qualified PT specialising in strength training and taking clients at Synergi Fitness, in the centre of Bristol (https://www.synergifitness.com/), as well as GymSet, a private studio in Clifton village (https://thegymset.com/). I also hold a bachelor’s degree in biomedical science.

As you may have noticed if you follow me on Instagram, I am a massive nerd when it comes to the science of strength training, nutrition and pain science. With the sheer amount of misinformation out there, I think it's really important that as fitness professionals we take an evidence-based approach and back up our recommendations with data from peer-reviewed journals, while helping our clients sift through the BS and find reliable learning resources.

Besides the science, I also love strength training for the way it can challenge limiting beliefs and boost confidence. Having been exposed early on in my fitness journey to narratives of the human body's supposed fragility propagated by medical professionals and online gurus, for a long time I thought of myself as the guy with the "bad back" and injury-prone hips. This massively limited what I could do in the gym (e.g. I was afraid of squatting to depth or performing barbell rows without chest support).

But by educating myself and gradually pushing outside of my comfort zone with the help of good physios and trainers, over the past few years I have learned that I am much more resilient than I thought I was, and that I can move in a variety of ways and lift heavy with full confidence in my body's ability to adapt and grow stronger. In turn, the joy of empowering others to do the same is a huge part of what draws me to personal training.
